Всё начинается со случайного знакомства процветающей буржуазной семьи Уилкокс с умными, культурными и полными идеализма сёстрами Шлегель. Ясноглазая Маргарет заводит дружбу с миссис Уилкокс, стремительная Елена приводит в их семью молодого банковского клерка Леонарда Баста, живущего на краю нищеты и разорения.
