Джей Мор и Пола Маршалл играют в комедии о Гари Барнсе, недавно разведенном маляре-подрядчике, и его бывшей жене Эллисон. После 15 лет брака они пытаются пережить катастрофический развод и начать новые отношения. Он - веселый папа, она - строгая мать. Они вместе опекают двоих детей: Луизу, политкорректную и обеспокоенную проблемами экологии одиннадцатилетку, и Тома, 14-летнего подростка, который смущается в присутствии девушек. Очаровательный и остроумный Гари ни с кем не встречался после развода, но потом все же находит себе девушку, Ванессу. Он боится сказать об этом Эллисон, ведь это не соответствует написанному в книге «Правила идеального развода». Но когда Эллисон сообщает, что собирается замуж за их семейного психолога, Гари понимает, что пора продолжать жить.
